Proactive or Procrastination?

Honestly... I am a procrastinator, and not proud of myself, but glad I got it off my chest. Even though I'm aware that I procrastinate, for some reason it's sadly like a habit now and I WANT TO GET RID OF THAT HABIT SO BADLY BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW! :'( I think it's partially because of those times where your body doesn't want to move/lazyness). It's also because of my schedule though. The only days I have some free time are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but on Fridays I'm usually shopping with my parents. Wednesdays I'm usually cleaning with my mom. So really I'm only free on Tuesdays.

My weeks are usually really busy, as I said earlier, but that is maybe 75% of why I put everything off till the last minute. Sure I'm lazy but I'm also busy with things like Taiko and Chorus performances, and I film football games sometimes. So, that sometimes gets in the way of my productivity.

I would change if I could, but it probably will take a lot of time. I would change so it becomes a habit, to go straight home and do my work right then and there. I know I'm getting better though, I do that some days unlike before. YAY! If I just keep on improving on my procrastination "problem," I know I can become a proactive me.

Lessons Learned

For this project that Mr. Sanderl assigned the class for HikiNo is actually more fun than I thought it was going to be. I think the most interesting part of this project would probably have to be, filming our b-roll and interviews. We had to go to one the their performances at the Marriot and it was AWESOME!!!!!!

I think the biggest roadblock for our team so far would have to be checking our schedules and meeting up together to film. With everyone being so busy, but we were able to meet up all together at least once. And that went perfectly fine, I'm glad we were able to get what we needed.

I think the most valuable part of this filming process would probably have to be the flow of every shot and how the film is put together. I think that's the most valuable part of this filming process because you basically don't want your audience to get lost and not know what's going on. Plus if we get a good flow and process of all our films really good, we're more closer to being on channel 9.

Back to School

I am back to school as an 8th grader! I can't believe that next year my classmates and I will be high schoolers. Its a new year to improve and to enjoy. My favorite moment so far would be getting to know how all my teachers teach, and being in student council. We just started painting a poster for relay for life, and on that poster we are going to paint hand prints, so I'm excited for that. My biggest challenge lately would be finding all the materials in time, and getting a project right on the first day of school. This year I plan on getting straight A's at least twice, so to achieve that I am going to work my but off till the last minute so that it can be the best I can make it. Like with the project I mentioned earlier, it's due at the end of the day and I am still making it better throughout the day.

Profile Project Progress

My team and I chose to make an interview about a math teacher and her struggles through life from all the way from India, to where she is now.  In Kaua`i teaching the 7th grade honors math class at Kapa`a Middle School.  We interviewed Ms. Andrade because she is very inspiring. She has many life lessons to tell her students so we thought she would be perfect for this interviewing project.  We decided to interview this person in particular because of the stories she tells us when we have extra time in her math class.  Ms. Andrade shares inspiring stories to help her "children" succeed in education and life.  She says, "keep your goals high and you can achieve it."  The equipment we used were a tripod, a DSLR camera and lavaliere mic packs.

Her backstory sounded very interesting and we wanted to find out more. When we started asking her questions we realized just how deep her advice goes and how hard her life was. We realized how much we could learn from her and the we got an amazing story and footage.

We used B-roll and Voice over to make the film GREAT.  We shot B-Roll of her class while she was teaching. B-Roll is made up of multiple sequences added to an interview or documentary to make the story more interesting. It is also used to hide jump cuts and soundbites. The B-Roll was used to cover our Voice-Overs. Voice-Overs are clips of someone talking to explain the interviewee’s story and to grab the viewers' attention. Brandi Baligad did our Voice-Overs.

Our team works ok together but the problem is we can't have everyone editing at the same time. So two people can edit and the other two have to do whatever else needs to be done. We can work together better by focusing more on our individual tasks instead of looking over someone's shoulder at what they are doing. I'm not saying this is a huge problem, I'm just saying that maybe once or twice one of my partner Hannah might've done this to me or maybe a few times Mikela did this to Hannah. We can get this done if we stay in for recess and lunch sometimes, but more time would be nice.

We will go from good to great in our rough cut to our final video. We will do this by listening to the critique and adding relevant b-roll to the story she is telling and and by fixing audio problems like the voice over and turning down the volume of the interview. We can also have a student interview instead of the pen story. Overall, we need more b-roll and a student interview. So that means, we need to film.

Practice Story Reflection

The project we are currently working on in G.T. is an interview. My team has just turned in a practice interview of myself, a Taiko Drummer. They interviewed me by asking provocative questions and using composition techniques. We also got B-Roll, or supporting footage, and edited the interview, B-Roll, and then added and edited a voiceover by a narrator (Brandi).

Some challenges our team faced was that on the day we were supposed to film the B-Roll, I accidentally forgot my drum and we couldn't get much footage, but we did get some. Another setback was that only two people at most could edit at the same time so the other two people had nothing to do that was of use to the team. We did not turn in our project during class so we had to stay in during lunch to get it done. Our project was late and if it was is a competition then we would've been disqualified.

Finally, I would say that next time I could've been more responsible by not forgetting the drum and editing the footage in time. Even though our team does work well together, we cracked under the pressure and things got a little hairy at the end with Hannah and Mikela debating whether or not to edit it this way or that way; and Brandi and I not having anything productive to do.

All about me

Hello, Aloha, Hola, Ni Hao and Konnichiwa everyone. Here's a little bit about me.

(P.S. I don't really speak Hawaiian Spanish Chinese or Japanese... just english. But, I speak a little Japanese.  Just so you know, I am not calling anyone a looser, if you are an Otaku and watched the anime "Fairy Tail" then you know what I am doing in my picture.)  :)

My name is Haley Gokan. I live on Kaua`i, Hawai`i in Kapa`a. I go to Kapa`a Middle School AKA KMS. I'm in seventh grade, and I'll probably seem a bit... unique to you, but once you meet me you'll get used to it. Ask my best friends Hannah, Brandi, Mikela, and Keegan. I am an Otaku, a drum player, an musician, a weirdo, and I love to sing. A lot of people also complement me on good presence on stage, a good clear presentation and good in front of any mic.

So... my favorite color is a teal or turquoise and my favorite food is pasta and seafood and... that's pretty much all you need to know. For my birthday get me some crab and melted butter and I will be good for the rest of the day. By the way my birthday is Dec. 6th 2001. Don't forget it... I'm kidding you can forget, it's ok.
